What Vehicles Can You Drive with a B License? Age Limit and Application Requirements
If you want to get behind the wheel and chart your own course, a B class driver's license is the ideal starting point for you. Before starting the application process, you should know the limits of authorization, legal age requirements, and training steps of a B license. The license class you choose directly affects not only the vehicle you will drive but also all the details that will guide your driving, from the type of transmission to the conditions for using a trailer.
What is a B License?
A B license is a driver's license obtained to drive vehicles permitted by legislation, primarily cars and vans.
You cannot get a license immediately after passing the driving test. You also need to receive training in traffic rules, first aid, vehicle mechanics, and traffic etiquette. After theoretical training, you take the exam. If you are successful, you continue with driving lessons, complete the practical exam, and are entitled to receive a driver's certificate.
A B license can be issued with manual or automatic transmission restrictions. When you complete the training and examination process with an automatic transmission vehicle, a code limiting the transmission you can use is added to your license. With such a license, you cannot drive a manual transmission vehicle. Drivers who pass the driving test with a manual vehicle can use both manual and automatic models in the same class.
Drivers obtaining a driver's license for the first time are considered probationary drivers for a period of two years from the date the license is issued. During this two-year period, the rules specific to probationary drivers apply. Repeated violations or exceeding the penalty point limit can lead to consequences ranging from license cancellation.
What Vehicles Can Be Driven with a B License?
A B license authorizes the driving of cars, vans, motorbikes, certain four-wheeled motorcycles, and wheeled tractors.
The primary area of use is cars and vans. However, B license holders can also drive M, B1, and F class vehicles. M class covers motorbikes. B1 class includes four-wheeled motorcycles with specific power and weight limits. F class refers to wheeled tractors. The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs' implementation instructions clearly define the scope of this authorization.
In daily life, the vehicles you can drive with a B driver's license can generally be listed as follows:
- Passenger cars registered as automobiles
- Light commercial vehicles classified as vans
- Motorbikes in the M class
- Four-wheeled motorcycles under the B1 category
- Truck-wheeled vehicles under the F category
The vehicle's exterior appearance alone does not determine license eligibility. A large-bodied model may be classified as a car, while another vehicle of similar dimensions may be registered as a van.
A different document is required to drive minibuses, buses, trucks, or tractors. A B license does not grant the right to drive these vehicles. For minibuses, a D1 license is required; for buses, a D license; for trucks, a C license; and for heavier combined vehicles, the relevant higher classes are required. The number of seats, maximum loaded weight, and registration information of the vehicle determine which class is necessary.
What is the Age Limit for a B Driving License?
To apply for a B driving license, you must be at least 18 years old. Your date of birth is used as the basis for determining the age limit for a B driving license. You cannot obtain a driving license for this class without meeting the age requirement.
What are the Requirements for Obtaining a B Driving License?
In addition to the age limit, you must also meet the educational, health, training, and examination requirements to obtain a B driving license.
The requirements for obtaining a B driving license begin with course registration. You need to apply to an authorized motor vehicle driver training course and submit the required documents. Then you attend theoretical lessons, pass the e-exam, and proceed to driving training. Once you complete the practical exam, your certificate information is transferred to the electronic system.
The main requirements are:
- At least primary school graduation
- Obtaining a driver's medical certificate
- Meeting the relevant criminal record requirements
- Completing mandatory theoretical training
- Obtaining a passing score on the e-exam
- Paying the practical driving test
- Paying the fees and other application costs
When choosing a course for a B driver's license, you should ask about the transmission type of the training vehicle beforehand. If you are considering taking the exam with an automatic vehicle, you should consider that your subsequent driving experience will be limited to automatic models only. If you have the possibility of driving a manual vehicle, it would be more appropriate to make your training and exam choices accordingly. The driver's certificate issued after the exams does not directly grant the authority to drive a vehicle. You must complete the application process at the population registry office until your B driver's license card is issued. Although there is no time limit for driver's certificates obtained on or after July 9, 2022, you cannot drive on the road until this registration is converted into a document.
What Documents Are Required for a B Driving License?
The initial application requires an identity card, driver's certificate, educational certificate, health report, biometric photograph, and payment information.
The documents submitted for a B driving license application are reviewed during the evaluation process at the population registry office. Some information, such as certificates and criminal records, can be viewed electronically. However, reviewing your document list before your appointment date will prevent you from having to reapply due to missing documents. Your application file includes the following documents and information:
- Valid identity document
- Driver's certificate available in the electronic system
- Document showing educational status
- Driver's health report
- One biometric photograph
- Blood group certificate or written statement
- Information on payment of fees, valuable papers, and foundation shares
- Criminal record checked electronically
The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs requests the submission of the relevant documents or their verification through the system during the initial registration. For educational certificates obtained abroad, a notarized Turkish translation is also required.

Since payment amounts may change annually, you should review the current official table before proceeding. The health report must also be submitted to the system by the authorized institution.
How Long is a B Driver's License Valid?
A B driver's license is valid for 10 years from the date of issue. When the license expires, you need to renew it. You do not need to re-enroll in a driving school or retake a driving test. You can apply to the population registry office with your ID, current health report, biometric photograph, and payment information required for renewal. Licenses M, A1, A2, A, B1, BE, F, and G, including the B license, have a 10-year validity period.
You should regularly check the expiry date on the card. If a shorter validity period is specified in the health report, you should also keep track of that period. You can also renew your B license if it is lost, damaged, or if your identity information changes.
Can I Drive an A1 Motorcycle with a B License?
A B license, when certain additional conditions are met, may allow you to drive A1 class motorcycles used outside of commercial activities. To benefit from this right, you must have a valid B license for at least two years. You must also meet the health requirements for two-wheeled vehicles and your driver's license must not have been revoked within the five years prior to the application. Once you complete driving training and pass the practical exam, your A1 certificate information will be entered into the system. The A1 certificate authorization is valid within the borders of Turkey and does not cover commercial motorcycle use.
This regulation does not automatically mean that every B license holder can drive a 125cc motorcycle. Driving an A1 class vehicle without completing training, exams, and system registration is outside your legal authority.
