This technological equipment, whose English name is “Traction Control System,” is known in Turkish as “Çekiş Kontrol Sistemi.” The system essentially maintains the perfect balance between the vehicle’s engine power and the rotational speed of the wheels. It completely prevents the wheels from spinning freely, especially during hill starts or sudden acceleration. This helps the vehicle remain much more stable and firmly positioned on the road.

What Does TCS Do?

The TCS system prevents you from losing control of the vehicle on slippery roads, minimizes the risk of skidding, and provides safer cornering and balanced acceleration. The greatest benefit of this system becomes especially clear in challenging weather conditions. On rainy, snowy, or icy roads, a vehicle’s traction with the surface can suddenly decrease. When you press the accelerator, the wheels may not find a firm point to grip on the road and can quickly begin to spin. A spinning wheel immediately loses all steering capability. Thanks to the TCS system, this risky situation is prevented, and the vehicle remains safely on its route at all times.

The TCS system is not only useful when setting off on a straight road. It also acts as a major and invisible safety shield when accelerating on winding roads. Pressing the accelerator too hard while cornering can cause dangerous oversteer or understeer. How Does the TCS System Work?

The TCS system monitors the speed sensors on the wheels and, as soon as it detects wheelspin, applies braking force to the relevant wheel or reduces engine power within seconds to restore traction balance.

The operating principle of the system is entirely based on electronic data flow from start to finish. Sensitive speed sensors located on each wheel continuously measure the instantaneous rotational speed of the wheels. This numerical data is instantly sent to the central control unit, in other words, the vehicle’s brain. The control unit constantly analyzes the incoming data and checks second by second whether there is an unexpected speed difference between the wheels.

Under normal driving conditions, the rotational speeds of all wheels are quite close to each other. However, when the vehicle encounters a slippery surface, one of the drive wheels may suddenly start rotating much faster than the others. This dangerous situation means that wheelspin has begun. As soon as the vehicle’s computer detects this critical difference, it activates its recovery intervention plan within microseconds. The system’s intervention method basically takes place in two different ways.

The first method is direct braking intervention. Instant hydraulic pressure is sent to the brake system connected to the spinning wheel. The wheel is lightly braked by the system, and its rotational speed is equalized with the other wheels. The second method is engine power intervention. The system does not only apply braking force to the wheels. It also momentarily reduces the fuel supply to the engine or limits spark ignition. The electronic throttle is specially controlled, and the torque produced by the engine is instantly reduced.

These two recovery mechanisms operate perfectly and simultaneously. Even if the driver does not lift their foot off the accelerator pedal, the vehicle balances the power on its own. A flashing yellow light on the instrument panel informs the driver that the system is actively operating at that moment. Once the intervention is complete and the wheels regain firm contact with the road, the system quickly returns to normal monitoring mode. You do not need to take any extra action. This entire complex process takes place automatically in the background.

In Which Situations Should the TCS System Be Turned Off?

The TCS system should only be temporarily turned off when your vehicle is completely stuck in mud, deep snow, or sand, allowing the wheels to spin and help the vehicle escape the obstacle. Most modern vehicles have a physical or digital button that allows you to deactivate this safety system.

Under normal road conditions, it is vitally important for this system to remain on at all times. However, in some very exceptional situations, it may be necessary to turn the system off temporarily. Especially in winter, when your vehicle gets stuck in a deep snowdrift, moving forward can become impossible. In such a recovery situation, the wheels need to spin to a certain extent. By spinning, the wheels dig through snow or soft mud and reach the harder, more grippable surface underneath. If the system remains active during this process, the sensors detect the wheel rotation as dangerous wheelspin. Then the system completely cuts engine power and prevents the vehicle from moving. For this reason, you need to turn off the system using the button until the vehicle is freed from where it is stuck.

The same recovery situation also applies to loose sandy terrain. During off-road driving, you may sometimes need to gain momentum and overcome an obstacle. If the system continuously cuts power, you quickly lose the necessary momentum. However, you must reactivate the system immediately after passing the obstacle. Keeping the system turned off once you return to a normal asphalt road poses a major driving risk.

Why Does the TCS Warning Light Come On?

The TCS warning light may remain continuously active on the instrument panel due to dirt on the wheel speed sensors, problems related to the ABS system, or electrical wiring connection faults.

When you first start your vehicle, all warning lights on the instrument panel illuminate briefly and then turn off. This is a standard situation and means that the vehicle’s systems are performing a self-check. However, if this light remains on after the engine starts or while driving normally, it means there is a problem with the system.

The most common cause of failure is dirt buildup on the speed sensors located just behind the wheels. Mud splashed from the road, heavy dust, or brake pad residue can completely cover these sensors over time. When the sensors cannot take accurate readings, the system gives an error and disables itself for safety reasons. In most cases, simply cleaning these sensors or replacing them if they are faulty completely solves the problem.

Another cause of failure is physical damage to the system’s wiring. Worn cables or poor contact in the connection sockets can directly interrupt signal transmission. In addition, minor calibration issues in the steering angle sensor can also trigger this warning light on the panel.

Because traction control works together with the braking system, a fault in the ABS hydraulic system can also directly cause this system to stop operating.
